Wherever. In the Beginning, It Was an Island
Floating Projects, 17–28 November

Barcelona-based artist Silvia Renda presents Wherever. In the Beginning, It Was an Island, a poignant exploration of the concept of place—both real and imagined—through the metaphor of islands. Drawing on her Sicilian heritage, Renda’s practice weaves together video, photography and sculpture to reflect on isolation, connection, and memory. Her works traverse the personal and the collective, tracing how identities are shaped through geography and displacement.

The exhibition also features contributions from local guest artists Florence Lee, Harry Tsang and Elaine Wong, who expand on Renda’s themes to create a rich intercultural dialogue. Together, the artists reflect on the universal human longing for belonging and the ways in which narratives transcend geographical boundaries.

I Know It By Heart
Pointsman Artspace, 16-28 Nov 2024

Running in parallel, I Know It By Heart showcases the powerful work of Argentinian artist Sofia Ungar, whose ongoing investigation into memory, trauma and historical erasure takes centre stage. Ungar’s practice confronts the legacy of Argentina’s dictatorship, blending personal recollection with collective memory in immersive installations incorporating video, text and sound.

Influenced by Jacques Derrida’s concept of “archive fever,” Ungar’s works—Aliento, That Morning, and Archive Fever—probe the instability of remembrance. Through them, she raises pressing questions about how histories are constructed, silenced and transmitted across generations.

Together, “Wherever. In the Beginning, It Was an Island” and “I Know It By Heart” offer audiences a rich, multi-layered experience, inviting reflection on the universal themes of identity, memory, and belonging in an ever-connected, yet fragmented world.

The Helsinki to Hong Kong Exchange Programme, initiated by nProjekt, facilitates cultural exchange and artistic collaboration between media artists based in Helsinki and the vibrant art scene of Hong Kong. The residency is scheduled for November 2025, a culturally vibrant month that offers a rich social and artistic environment as well as favourable weather conditions in Southeast Asia.

What is the Non-Solo Exhibition the Selected Artist Will Participate In

The Non-Solo series was launched in 2021, showcasing local artists in Hong Kong during the pandemic. Since 2024, it has expanded internationally, introducing the Non-Local Non-Solo initiative, which invites overseas artists to exhibit in Hong Kong.

Each Non-Solo exhibition consists of two distinct but interrelated sections: a Solo section and a Guest section. The Solo section presents a series of works by the selected artist, similar to a solo exhibition. Meanwhile, the Guest section presents a single work by each of three guest artists, chosen for their ability to engage with the themes, concepts, materials or artistic sensibilities of the featured artist. Through this curated interplay, the exhibition expands and enriches the thematic scope of the featured artist's work, fostering a dynamic and thought-provoking dialogue.

For the upcoming Non-Local Non-Solo exchange programme, the featured artists will be selected through this open call, inviting Helsinki-based practitioners to propose a series of works for the solo part of the exhibition.
