Art making is a way

Exhibition making is another

Non-Solo highlights multi-layered exploration and dialogues, not solo would do

Art making is a learning process

learning from the medium, learning from the subject matter

most importantly, how a person thinks and feels

artistically processes the surroundings

4 Non-Solos in 2021, curated by Jamsen Law, on one level, similar to conventional solo shows, display artistic research outcomes of one featured artist. The artist works on his/her pre-set theme and concepts, experiments with her materials and media, and communicates with the curator for new perspectives and deeper understanding of the inclination. Building on top of the ready set of artworks and the carefully selected site(s), the artist will collaborate with the curator to create another layer for and with the exhibition. Treating exhibition as an art form, the show aims to display not only the artworks, but also the correlations among them. To expand the scope of the discussion, guest artists are also invited to join.

Emphasising the presence of the artist through the presentation of artworks, the layer of exhibition making attempts to be actualised by the arrangement of installation and positioning of artworks by both the featured and guest artists. The guests’ works, which could be newly made or selected by the artists, reveal distances and relationships, and bring the audience to appreciate the ideas and thoughts through the designed spatial and sensory experience. More importantly, based on the character of the featured artist and the compromised direction, the choice of guest artists defines another layer of the context. It is an approach for participating artists to inspire, reflect on and share together the very solo artistic researches and practices for works of art. Each artist, both the featured and guest artists, will communicate with the curator separately to work on the understood directions, and start the “conversations” when the artworks “meet” in the venue. The curator will create links and traces for the audience to follow the lines of thoughts of the conversations among the artworks in the hall.
